Trying to figure out how much food your dog really needs?
At Novadogfood, we know there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Every dog is unique, with different energy levels, life stages, and metabolisms. That’s why we offer clear feeding guidance for each of our recipes, helping you get off to the right start whether you’re feeding one recipe, or switching between them.
We believe starting with our recommended range is the best place to begin. But for dogs who are either super energetic or much more laid-back, a little adjustment might be needed to get it just right.
Two Key Factors to Consider
1. Activity Level
A highly active dog – think regular hikes, long runs, or intense play – will usually need food from the higher end of the feeding range. On the other hand, a couch-loving companion or older dog may do better with less.
2. Metabolism
Just like people, some dogs naturally burn energy faster. Even if your dog seems calm, they might need more food to maintain a healthy weight if they have a quick metabolism.

Still Not Sure Where Your Dog Fits?
Our rule of thumb:
Start on the lower end of the feeding range, then adjust based on your dog’s energy levels, weight, and condition.
Here’s how to do that in a healthy, gradual way:
A Simple Guide to Adjusting Portions
-
Start Low
Begin feeding at the lower end of the recommended range. Most dogs thrive here and it’s easier to add a little more if needed than to backtrack from overfeeding. -
Monitor Your Dog
Watch their weight, energy levels, stool quality, and general condition. Are they maintaining a lean shape? Still full of beans? -
Make Small Adjustments
If needed, tweak the portion size by around 10% at a time, waiting a few days between changes to see how your dog responds.
Don’t Forget to Regularly Check Body Condition
Feeding isn’t something you “set and forget.” Dogs can gain or lose weight slowly over time, especially as their lifestyle or routine changes.
